Version Control software with PeopleSoft Implementation Projects

I am looking for a version control software that can perform change control in my project as well as ease the migration effort.
I would love to learn about your experience with ClearCase, PVCS, STAT etc.

When you refer to 'project' do you mean the project in PeopleSoft app designer? If so, then there is Change Control already built into PeopleTools. Go to the menu Navigation: Tools, Change Control Administrator. Check PeopleBooks for details on how to turn this on and how locking works. This can be quite effective if done correctly, especially on larger implementations..

Has anyone else found Change Control to be buggy in Tools 8.42.08 or .09? When one user locks an object, another can go in and open the same object and lock it too!! After the second developer locks it, you start getting SQL errors. Not very effective Change Control, IMHO.

Change Control worked great in 8.4 and previous versions. I believe development is working on fixing this in 8.42.

I don't believe qa00001 was asking about the PS project change control... unless I'm mistaking!

We are using STAT for versioning and source control, we are having a LOT of bumps... but I don't think PVCS even supports PeopleSoft. I'm not sure about ClearCase. I would vote for Clearcase if it supports PeopleSoft ;-)

Thanks!

Daili

How did you get on with STAT?

I have looked at it in the past for version control, but had doubts as to how effective it would be. Along the lines of:

- How easy is it to maintain / use?
- How does it work with PS delivered patches? It makes big promises of 'automated management', but does it really?
- Can it manage anything outside of the PS DB, or do you need to have a second system to manage non-PS objects?
- Can it manage and migrate configuration in PS, or just tools objects?

Any real-world experience greatly appreciated!

I have installed Stat on behalf of Quest at many sites across Europe. It is a very simple tool to use, mapping quite a complex process.

To answer the above points:-

- Maintenance is extremely easy. Most of the time on installations is spent examining the development process as it relates to your site rather than configuring Stat.

- As I understand it (and please refer to Quest for more clarification on this), the 'automated management' refers to the fact that you now have a searchable SQL database containing technical and functional information relating to your customisations. This is the main method of proving a return on investment in Stat, as it makes the initial functional analysis performed with a PS upgrade so much easier than having to wade through masses of XL spreadsheets and Word documents.

- It is able to track versions of flat file objects (which you can define)

- Version 5 (which has recently been released) includes the idea of 'Data Objects' (currently only for PS on Oracle) which provide a method of migrating configuration data.

I hope this helps.
